Sometimes the Ministry of the Interior will require a genetic test (DNA) to prove a person’s paternity over his child. This requirement usually arises when the recognition of paternity gives the child the right to status in Israel, for instance, a child of a father who is an Israeli citizen and a foreign mother. Paternity testing is a legal proceeding conducted in the Family Court, and at the end of it, the court gives a ruling declaring whether the man is, in fact, the father of the minor or not. To decide whether a particular person is or isn’t the father, the courts usually send him, the mother, and the minor for genetic testing.
The genetic test is a blood or saliva test performed in tissue testing laboratories in several hospitals in the country.
